Day 67 – When life meets Life
Study Luke 7:11-17
“When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Luke 7:13
As the fame and popularity of Jesus continued to sweep through the region, a growing crowd of disciples (far beyond the core twelve) followed Him. His journeys brought Him to Nain, a small village situated in the Jezreel plain, just six miles southwest of Nazareth. It was there, at the gates of the town, that Jesus encountered a scene of profound human heartbreak.
A funeral procession was winding its way out of the city. Any funeral is a tragedy, but this loss was uniquely devastating. The deceased was the only son of a woman who was already a widow. In the ancient world, losing her only remaining provider and protector meant a future of severe poverty and vulnerability. A large crowd accompanied her, filled with friends, neighbours, and likely hired mourners playing flutes and cymbals to voice the community’s grief.
When the Lord saw her, His heart was immediately moved. Luke specifically uses the title “𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥” (𝘒𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘴) here, subtly underscoring the divine authority and deity of Christ even as He reveals His deep, tender humanity. Looking at the broken-hearted mother, Jesus instantly understood her plight and offered her a word of comfort: “𝘋𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘱.”
Charles Spurgeon, in a sermon on this text, noted how this physical event mirrors a profound spiritual reality: those who are spiritually dead bring immense grief to their godly loved ones, and in that grief, there is only one Helper who can truly restore life.
Jesus then stepped forward and touched the open coffin, causing the bearers to stand still. According to Jewish law, touching a bier rendered a person ceremonially unclean, yet Jesus never feared contagion or defilement. His holiness instead cleansed and restored whatever He touched.
Jesus spoke to the dead as though he were alive. This is the exclusive power of God, as Paul reminds us in Romans 4:17 – the God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did. Instantly, the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gently presented him back to his rejoicing mother.
While this young man was resurrected to earthly life, he points us to the ultimate promise of the gospel. In Christ, we look forward to a true resurrection where we will rise never to die again, victorious over the grave forever. The news of this miracle echoed throughout Judea and the surrounding regions, bearing witness to the One who holds the keys to life and death.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your deep compassion in our moments of greatest grief and helplessness. You are the God who speaks life into dead places and breaks the power of sorrow. Help me to trust Your voice, rest in Your authority, and live in the joyful hope of Your eternal resurrection. Amen. ©
