Day 66 – A worthy servant
“Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Luke 7:7
Jesus did not hesitate for a moment to go toward the centurion’s home. Yet, in Jewish tradition, entering a Gentile’s residence was considered completely against custom, rendering one ceremonially unclean according to rabbinic laws. But while it was against human custom, it was never against God’s law, and Jesus was always ready to break down man-made barriers to show grace.
Realizing that it would cause social conflict for a prominent rabbi to cross his threshold, the centurion sent friends to meet Jesus along the way with a humbling message: “𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥, 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘺 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘧.”
The contrast here is beautiful. The Jewish elders insisted the centurion was worthy of a miracle because of his good deeds; the centurion himself felt utterly undeserving that Jesus would even walk into his house. They praised him for building their synagogue, yet he blushed at his own spiritual bankruptcy before the Lord. Here we see that strong faith and deep humility belong together. As Charles Spurgeon so eloquently wrote, faith and humility go hand in hand like a brave brother and a meek sister; one bold as a lion in trusting Jesus, the other blushing at self.
Instead of demanding a physical presence or a visible sign, the centurion made a simple, profound request: “𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘥.”
As a military man placed under authority with soldiers under his command, he understood the principle of spiritual jurisdiction. He knew an officer doesn’t need to stand in the room to execute an order; he simply gives the command, and it is done. The centurion recognized that Jesus possessed this same absolute authority over illness, distance, and creation itself. He trusted that a single word spoken from the lips of Christ carried more power than any physical touch.
How often do we limit God by assuming He must work according to our sight, our feelings, or our expectations? True faith rests entirely in the authority of His Word, knowing that when He speaks, His purpose will be accomplished.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, teach me the bold humility of this centurion. Forgive me for the times I try to earn Your favor or limit Your power to what I can see. Speak Your word of healing and peace into my life today, and give me a heart that simply takes You at Your Word. Amen. ©
