Day 9 – Pride

“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate” Proverbs 8:13

Pride – The quality or state of being proud – such as excessive, conceited self-esteem. An excessively high view of oneself and your accomplishments.

Pride in Hebrews is Gêâh (pronounced Gay-aw) and simply means arrogance.

CS Lewis wrote, “A proud person is always looking down on things and people; and of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something above you.” In short, pride is looking down on the creation of God and elevating yourself above God.

Boastfulness in oneself gives you the feeling of invincibility and empowerment. A tiny taste of pride can leave you desiring more and more until you feel self-entitled and powerful and believe you can achieve anything without God. You are climbing a pedestal to your downfall. Sadly, the sin of pride causes you not to see your inequities and prevents you from bringing them to Jesus and asking for forgiveness. Justification of self becomes bigger than repentance of sins.

Prayer: Father, thank You for showing us that placing anything above You, is the sin of pride. Show us to always be humble in what we achieve and gain so that it brings honour and glory to You only. Amen.
