Talitha Koum

Jesus and his disciples has just crossed the Sea of Galilee to the western shore and tried to make their way through a crowd of people in Capernaum when a prominent synagogue leader named Jairus fell at Jesus’s feet and pleaded with Him to come to his house and heal his dying 12-year-old little girl. Having compassion for Jairus’s obvious distress, Jesus and his disciples pushed through the crowd toward his house.

But…

Amid the mob was a woman with issues. A woman who had suffered twelve long years with a bleeding disorder. She spent all her life savings hoping for a cure and when she heard that Jesus the Healer would be making an appearance in her town, she made her way through the cluster of people surrounding Jesus and reached to touch the hem of His robe. Jesus stopped. Her bleeding stopped.

Sensing the healing flow from His body, Jesus stopped and asked who touched him. The disciples were baffled at Jesus’s inquiry – cause look at the crowd! But the woman, realizing Jesus knew, fearfully fell at His feet and confessed. Jesus replied, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.”

Before Jesus finished reassuring the healed woman, Jairus received word that his little girl died. I can only imagine how Jairus must have felt at that very moment. Why did Jesus stop? Was his little girl not the reason they were there? Why did this woman have to cause a delay?

But…

Jesus, Peter, James, and John accompanied Jairus to his house to be greeted by the loud wails of mourners. Jesus went in, picked up the little girl’s limp little hand, and said, “Talitha Koum”, which means “little girl, arise!”. The name of the little girl is unknown, but this endearment from Jesus woke her from death and today she is referred to as Talitha. When Jesus said the Aramaic phrase “Talitha koum”, he performed one of his most astonishing miracles, one that still has important lessons for us today. Jesus is never late. Life will throw what it can in the way and with Jesus, there is a BUT followed by a miracle.

Sweet sister, I want to encourage you today that Jesus is on His way toward you. He knows about you and your situation, even if there is another miracle sandwiched before he tells you, “Talitha Koum!” And though, through this month, we learned so much about the women in the Bible, we are all still his little girls whom He loves deeply. Rise as he calls you Talitha Koum from the death situations holding you back and start a new journey by following our Saviour.
