Day 27 – Baptism of Jesus

Study Luke 3:21-22

“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Luke 3:22

Unlike the other Gospels, Luke does not spend a lot of narrative on Jesus’s baptism, yet it is filled with prophetic depth and foundational faith. Jesus did not come to be the Messiah to the Jewish nation only; He came for ALL sinners. He – who had no sin – chose to become one with us and chose to be baptised (washed) by John as a foreshadow of what would come. Jesus became the sin offering on the cross for us to stand righteous before the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Jesus was 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘵 us. Baptised along with the others at the Jordan River without them even knowing who He was. But God’s audible voice confirms Jesus’ identity as His beloved son. Throughout the Bible we often see that God gives a new name to His called – those born for a specific purpose for the Kingdom. Abram became Abraham. Saul became Paul. And here, Jesus is introduced as God’s beloved son – a confirmation of kingship and sonship.

Pray with me: Father, thank You for the example, Jesus gave us for the baptism and as we are baptised, we are confirmed with Jesus as righteous sons and daughters in Your Kingdom. Thank You, Jesus, for being amongst us as human, and still being amongst us through the Holy Spirit. Amen. ©
