Day 28 – Spirit in the form of a dove

“And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him,” Luke 3:22a

What a beautiful, striking picture: the Dove resting upon the Lamb. There is a profound spiritual truth hidden in this imagery – to carry the power of the Spirit (the Dove), we must first possess the character of the Lamb (Jesus). The Holy Spirit does not settle on the proud. He seeks the meekness, humility, and obedience of the Lamb. While Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and possessed His presence from birth, His baptism marked a distinct, pivotal moment. It was here that He received the visible, abiding anointing of the Holy Spirit to officially initiate and empower His public ministry.

This scene carries a breathtaking echo of the Old Testament. Centuries earlier, when Noah sent a dove from the ark to see if the floodwaters had receded, the dove returned carrying a freshly plucked olive leaf. This was not merely a sign that dry land had reappeared, it was a heavenly declaration that the judgment of the flood had ended and peace was restored between God and His creation.

As Jesus emerges from the Jordan, stepping out of the waters of baptism, the heavens open and the Dove descend once more. Just as the dove in Genesis signalled the end of the flood, the Dove at Jesus’ baptism signals the end of humanity’s spiritual exile. The waters of judgment have parted, and God’s favour has returned.

Through the audible affirmation of Jesus’ Sonship, the Father declared a new era of divine peace. It is no coincidence that peace is a central, driving theme throughout Luke’s Gospel. Jesus is our ultimate 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘮. He is the true Olive Tree, into whom we, the wild and broken branches, have been mercifully grafted. By resting in His identity, we find not only peace for a turbulent world, but deep, eternal peace for our very souls

Pray with me: Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit coming down on Jesus in the form of a Dove carrying so much meaning and love to affirm Him as Your Beloved Son. Thank You, that through this imagery we understand a little bit more of the Holy Spirit and His guidance in our lives. Thank You for always guiding me in peace. Amen. ©
