Day 2 – Perfect numbers
I have often wondered why there were ten plagues instead of five in the biblical story.
Although the Lord has the power to deal with situations immediately, He is a merciful God who always gives a warning before judgment. The reason for the number ten is that God often uses numbers throughout the Bible. In biblical numerology, the number ten represents the fullness of quantity. Therefore, the ten plagues of Egypt symbolize the fullness of God’s expression of justice upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
The plague of Egypt was used by God to demonstrate that He is the only true God, far greater and more powerful than all the gods of Egypt. It also shows us a merciful God who gave Pharaoh ten opportunities to change his mind and heart, repent and turn to the one true God. Each time Pharaoh refused God’s offers, the severity and consequences of the plagues increased. Pharaoh’s disobedience, prideful heart, and refusal to allow the Israelites to leave ultimately led to judgment through the Ten Plagues.
Moses and Aaron were the messengers of God with a simple message to Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go to serve to Lord. Pharaoh’s responses were prideful and said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go” Exodus 5:2.
The ten plagues showcased the might of the Lord to the Israelites, Pharaoh, and the Egyptians. The gods of Egypt were vanquished, and this event was commemorated for generations to come. It was recorded for posterity to signify the clash of deities, and it marked a fresh start for the people of God. This divine warfare between God and Pharaoh was just the beginning of future battles for the believers.
This is a lesson for both of us that God will fight our battles. The burdens we carry can be heavy, but Jesus was sent to carry them for us. We should fight our battles by praying on our knees and giving praise to the Lord Almighty.
Prayer: Lord, the battle in my life is already won by You and I want to give You praise for standing steadfast during my battles. Because of You Jesus, I can face tomorrow, and I welcome You in my presence Holy Spirit. Amen.
