Day 1 – Now Solomon loved the Lord
1 Kings 3:3 “Now Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he was sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.”
We will soon look at King Solomon’s request for wisdom at the very beginning of his reign as king of Israel. Let’s take a closer look at Solomon as a man. Solomon was far from perfect: he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places, as was the custom of the heathens, and he recognised his weakness as king in that he lacked the experience and insight to rule his people.
But there is one statement in this verse that catches the eye: He loved the Lord. This statement was key to Solomon’s success. This is where it all started. His heart was in the right place. Out of His love for the Lord came the desire to not only follow in his father’s footsteps but also to find wisdom and knowledge to reign wisely.
God saw his heart. On one of these occasions when Solomon went to offer sacrifices, God told him in a dream to ask for anything he wanted. In humility, Solomon asked for wisdom, and God granted him his request, and so much more. The first commandment is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for this simple, yet profound example of an ordinary man, who discovered where to find wisdom. Kindle my love for You anew, Lord. Give me the insight and discernment today to see things the way You see them. Amen.
