Day 23 – Leviticus: Introduction

“The Lord called Moses from the Tabernacle and said to him, “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel.” Leviticus 1:1-2a NLT
“God seems so far away! If only I could see or hear Him.” these are words I’ve uttered quite a few times. How about you? Struggling with loneliness, burdened by despair, riddled with guilt, or overwhelmed by problems? Madi in God’s image, we were created to have a close relationship with Him, thus, when fellowship is broken, we are incomplete and need restoration.
Communion with the living God is the essence of worship. It is vital, touching the very core of our existence. Contrary to popular belief, Leviticus is dedicated to worship. After Israel’s dramatic exodus from Egypt, the nation was camped at the foot of Mount Sinai for approximately two years to listen to God. It was a time for resting, teaching, building, meeting with Him face-to-face, and learning to become the chosen nation He desired.
The overwhelming message of Leviticus is the holiness of God. But how can unholy people approach a holy God? First sin must be dealt with. Thus, opening the chapters of Leviticus gives one detailed instruction for offerings – active symbols of repentance and obedience. Whether bulls, grain, goats, doves, or sheep, the sacrificial offerings had to be perfect (with no defects) a picture of the ultimate, perfect sacrifice to come: Jesus Christ the Lamb of God.
Jesus has come and opened the way to God by giving up His life as the final sacrifice in our place. True worship and oneness with God begin as we confess our sins and accept Jesus as the only one who can redeem us and give us the way to approach God in a loving relationship.
Prayer: Father, often we don’t like to read about the law, but it is the very law You gave sketching Your character and heart for us. Give us the wisdom and understanding to read Leviticus with Your love and Jesus’s sacrifice in our minds and take what You share deep within our souls. Amen.
