Day 22 – Exodus: Character sketch of Aaron
“Call your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests.” Exodus 28:1 NLT
When Moses doubted his ability to perform what God commanded Him, God instructed him to take Aaron with – his brother – who later became the first high priest of Israel, chosen and ordained by God. Aaron’s role in the Exodus and later books of the Pentateuch is pivotal in the spiritual relationship between God and Israel.
While Moses was on the summit of Sinai, Israel pressured Aaron to build a golden calf for them to worship. He was tempted to sin and gave in to the pressure. Instead of sticking to his guns, he decided to please the people. Isn’t that the same situation most spiritual leaders find themselves in today? Choosing to please people rather than pleasing God?
Strengths and accomplishments
He was an effective communicator and the mouthpiece for Moses. He was chosen and ordained as the first hight priest of Israel.
Weaknesses and mistakes
His pliable personality made him a people-pleaser, giving in to the demands of the nation. He participated with Moses in disobeying God’s orders about the water-giving rock and joined his sister, Miriam, in complaining against Moses.
Life lessons from Aaron’s story
God gives individuals special abilities weaving it together for His use. The very skills that make a good team player sometimes also make a poor leader.
Prayer: Father, thank You that we can learn so much from the person Aaron and that pleasing You should be our heart’s desire. Even if the crowd plies pressure, let us resist the temptation through the strength we find in Jesus Christ and choose You above all else. Even if we stand alone, we know You are with us. Amen.
