Day 21 – Exodus: Character sketch of Moses

“Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. And he said, “O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession.” Exodus 34:8-9 NLT

Some people seem to be magnets for trouble; when conflict breaks out, they always manage to be nearby. REACTION is their favourite ACTION! This was Moses. Throughout his life, he was at his finest and worst responding to the conflicts around him – the burning bush experience is an illustration of his character. But an amazing thing happened to Moses over the years. He didn’t stop reacting but learned to react correctly. The kaleidoscopic action swirling around him each day as he led over 2 million people in the wilderness was more than challenging for his reacting character and most of the time he stood as a “buffer” between God and Israel, pleading and keeping the peace.

Leadership involves reaction. If we want to react with instincts consistent with God’s will, we must develop habits of obedience to God and rather react to His word rather than the situation. In Moses we see an outstanding personality shaped by God. He did not change who Moses was; He did not give him new abilities and strengths. Instead, He took Moses’ characteristics and moulded them until they were suited for His purpose.

Strengths and accomplishments

He had an Egyptian education and wilderness training and could understand and adapt to both. He set the Exodus in motion and became the greatest leader of Israel. He received the Ten Commandments and was the lawgiver and prophet of the Lord. He was the author of the Pentateuch, so we have the historical narrative of Israel’s history.

Weaknesses and mistakes

He killed an Egyptian. He doubted God could use him. Through all he did for Israel and as God’s servant, he did not enter the promised land because of disobedience.

Life lessons from Moses’s story

God’s timetable is life-sized: first He prepares then uses according to His purpose. He can do mighty miracles, yet chooses to do most of His great work through flawed and sinful humans.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for choosing Moses from who we can learn so much about character development, obedience, leadership, and a living in close relationship with You. May we accept the work You are doing within us, enhancing and improving our character to yearn to be more Christlike. Amen.
