A Ruth Relationship – Day 20
I am ready
“Be sure to notice where he lies down, then go and uncover his feet and lie down there. He will tell you what to do” Ruth 3:4
Biblical scholars have different views about why Ruth had to uncover Boaz’s feet. An interesting Rabbinic argument is that ‘feet’ is a biblical idiom for genitals and Ruth’s action to uncover his feet was to in a sense expose Boaz’s genitals. Well….that’s one way to get a proposal!
But in fact, in certain Palestine communities (in our modern-day and age) the owners of the fields will sleep at the threshing floor, fully clothed and cover their feet with a mantle. This is done because they have not gone home to wash their feet as is their custom before they enter the inner sanctuary of their bedrooms.
There is one Hebrew custom that pulls all the information together and describes the symbolism of the scenario, without the sexual concepts – only the literal reading of the context. Feet are feet. Hebrew slaves would lie at their master’s feet as a sign of respect to the master and indicate that they are ready for the next instruction. It is also a sign of complete surrender and humility. Have you ever lied on the floor praying, when you feel you need to be as low as you can in front of our Father’s feet? I know I have. Prostrating myself and opening my heart and saying: “Lord, I am ready”.
Ruth Relationship Advice: You, as a Ruth, have to take the step to lie down at our Father’s feet and uncover them in complete respect, surrender and humility and say: “I am ready”
Prayer: Father, today I lie before your feet to uncover them in complete surrender and humility to say I am ready. I am ready for our relationship. I am ready for Your instruction. I am ready, Lord. Amen.
