Day 10 – Long-term Biblical mentorship example

Elijah & Elisha.

2 Kings 2:2 “Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So they went down to Bethel.”

The story of Elijah and Elisha is a common long-term relationship to look at. Scholars believe that Elisha served under Elijah between six to ten years. They worked side by side, and when Elijah left this earth, he passed his mantle and a blessing to Elisha who carried on with the work God intended. Two distinct personalities used by God in their generational time, (for separate purposes yes), but also to teach and learn from one another.

Elijah was a man of action and lived a life of faith in obedience to God. He was diligent and hardworking; his heart was prepared to go the distance. Faithful and fruitful, willing to pass on the work of God to Elisha by mentoring as their relationship grew.

Elisha represents the true spirit of a biblical mentee under mentorship authority. Think of all the life lessons poured into his life… He observed and learned as much as he was taught to continue the work once Elijah left.

Prayer: Father, may we be worthy of Your calling on our lives. May we have the patience and wisdom to teach and to accept teaching. May we always have a servant’s heart as we continue our journey You planned according to Your will. Amen.
