Day 11 – Short-term Biblical mentorship
Proverbs 9:9 “Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning”.
In April 2021, we began a prayer group that met on Saturday mornings. At first, we were just hoping to pray together and didn’t expect much. In the first year, we prayed a lot and shed many tears. Unknowingly, God used this time for us to support and counsel each other. The following year, we started doing in-depth Bible study and intercessory prayer. Some women only joined a short time, and we were initially disappointed when they left. However, we learned that some needed short-term guidance that brought healing and gave them the skills they needed to move forward where God wanted them to be.
This led us to understand a different type of mentoring: short-term (or flash mentoring). Today, people are used to fast-paced electronic communication in all areas of their lives, so short-term mentoring can be adapted to work with that, using apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, and others. Many councillors and life coaches use the internet to do counselling. Short-term mentoring is ideal for doing short courses or exchanging new perspectives with a mentor.
Mentees see the value of connecting with a mentor for immediate, targeted guidance and support. We share all the different elements (positive and negative) in the book and hope to enlighten you in our journey to make disciples by ensuring you understand all the different elements of short-term mentoring.
Prayer: Lord, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” Ephesians 4:28. Amen.
