Day 10 – Trees: The fig tree

“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.” Genesis 3:7

The only other tree mentioned by name in the Garden of Eden is the fig tree. But this is not as coincidental as we might think. Like everything in the Word, there is a specific reason God mentions something in His Word.

The fig tree is the representation and conceptualization of our souls and also the tree mentioned most (and visited) by Jesus. In Matthew 21:19-20 Jesus cursed the fig tree, a beautiful example of the reality of our souls not bearing the fruit of His teachings. Even if there were leaves, it didn’t signify the tree was fruitful. In life, and sometimes in our ministries, we hide behind the leaves of our actions instead of embracing the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to produce the fruit thereof. But, like Adam and the woman, it is a form of hiding and not walking in God’s truth.

Will Jesus find fruit when He comes to visit you?

Prayer: Father, throughout the Word we often read about the fig tree and I thank You for the lessons we can learn from it. Today I ask forgiveness for the times I hid behind fig leaves and not bearing the fruit I should. Holy Spirit, please guide me in my life and ministry to walk in the Spirit and produce fruit that when you, Jesus, visit my soul there will be fruit. Amen.
