Day 11 – Genesis: Character map of Isaac

“And Abraham named their son Isaac.” Genesis 21:3
The sound of your name calls you to attention anywhere; it sets you apart. Yes, a name carries great authority. The choice of Isaac’s name (he laughs) must have created a variety of feelings for Abraham and Sarah each time they spoke it. I wonder if, at times, it reminded them of their shocked laughter at God’s announcement that in their old age, they would be parents. I can only imagine the joyful feelings of an answered prayer every time they called him.
In a family of forceful initiators, Isaac was the quiet, mind-my-own-business type -unless God specifically called him to take action. Though he carried the patriarchal position, Rebekah had the power, and rather than standing in this authority, he found it easier to compromise and lie to avoid confrontations. Despite these shortcomings, Isaac was part of God’s plan for His chosen nation. The model from Abraham included a priceless gift of faith and trust in the one true God.
Usually, we identify with Isaac in his weakness but consider that God works through people despite their shortcomings.
Strengths and accomplishments
Isaac was the first descendant in fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham. He demonstrates great patience and resilience when tested by others.
Weaknesses and mistakes
Like most of us, under pressure, Isaac’s go-to was to lie and avoid confrontation. He played favourites between his sons which alienated his wife.
Life lessons from Isaac’s story
From Isaac, we learn that patience brings rewards. Both God’s plans and promises are larger than people and He remains faithful even when we are faithless.
Share with us what Isaac’s story means to you.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the precious lessons we can take from the story of Isaac. May I learn from his mistake by playing favourites and treat and respect each member of my family for who You created them to be. Amen.
