Day 152 – Jeremiah: God’s judgment on the nations

“But do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant; do not be dismayed, Israel. For I will bring you home again from distant lands, and your children will return from their exile. Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet, and no one will terrorize them.” Jeremiah 46:27 NLT

Reading Jeremiah 46:1 to Jeremiah 52:34

In these last few chapters, Jeremiah delivers prophecies about foreign nations and the fall of Jerusalem. He lived to see many of his prophecies come to fulfilment, most notably the fall of Jerusalem.

All of Jeremiah’s prophecies against foreign nations have been grouped together. Many in these nations assumed they were free from judgment and punishment for their sin. Following these prophecies is a historical appendix recounting the fall of Jerusalem. Just as Jerusalem received its punishment, these nations were certain to receive theirs as well. Those who still believe today that judgment will never touch them are forewarned.

Jeremiah prophesied that after the destruction of the nation, God would send a new shepherd, the Messiah. He would lead his people into a new future, a new covenant, and a new day of hope. He would accomplish this by changing their sinful hearts into hearts of love for God. God still transforms people by changing their hearts. His love can eliminate the problems created by sin. Each of us can have assurance of a new heart by repenting of our sin, trusting Christ to save us, and loving God.

Prayer: Father, through the latter of Jeremiah’s prophecies, we clearly see Your heart for all people and that the warnings still ring true today. The message of truth is clear: repent and turn to the Lord. Thank You that we have Jesus Christ as our Messiah, and through Him, we enjoy a personal and beautiful relationship with You. Amen.
