Day 12 – Curses from man: Relational authority

“With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them..” Genesis 31:32 (KJV)
Someone with relational authority can also speak curses over you. Your husband, for instance, has relational authority over you. In this verse, we see that Jacob spoke a curse over Rachel (not knowing that she had stolen her father’s gods) and when she had their child, she died. Your father also has relational authority over you. This is why the role of the father in the house is so crucial. If you have a father who speaks negatively over you all the time, that can become a curse on you. The irony about this is that, as we said before, this curse is probably on your father as well. It is probably something that was passed on through the bloodline.
Other relational authorities include teachers, pastors, and other religious leaders. Teachers have authority over their students and can therefore curse their students when they speak negatively over them. Pastors and religious leaders have authority over their congregation and can curse the members of the congregation.
Sometimes curses are unintentional, or spoken in moments filled with emotion, but this does not mean the devil will not enforce the curse. That is what he does, and this is why we should be so careful of speaking in anger or emotional moments. Once something is said, it can not be unsaid. Teachers have a very important role in their students’ lives and should be extra vigilant when speaking over them. Parental curses are also very powerful and I have experienced that comments from parents can also lead to self-imposed curses, which we will discuss tomorrow.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I might be under a curse spoken by someone in authority over me. Please show me the cause of this curse. Thank you for showing me that I can be free from the curses imposed on me by relational authority. Your grace is sufficient for me. Amen
