Day 11 – God curses: Swore falsely in the name of the Lord

“And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:12 (KJV)

“Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” Matthew 5:33 -37 (KJV)

When we swear falsely in the name of the Lord, we bring shame on the Name of the Lord. When we swear or take an oath, and we fail to fulfill this commitment, it will lead to a curse, because then we make ourselves liars. This is, I believe, why Jesus said we should not swear at all. It is to protect ourselves that He is warning us not to swear. In Zechariah 5:4 we see that should you swear falsely in the name of the Lord, your whole house will be destroyed. The curse will stay on your house and the house will be destroyed.

This is quite alarming and this shows us how serious God is about us swearing falsely in His name. This is also why we should always tell the truth. Swearing falsely is also lying, and we are not to lie. Swearing falsely can also be when we speak something as the truth, or as written in the Bible, and then it is not in the Bible. When we swear by His name, we make His name less than the holy, almighty name that it actually is. We have no right to make the Lord’s name smaller than it is. Jesus was right to warn us, it is better to not swear at all. If this is a habit for you to say “I swear”, ask the Holy Spirit to help you get rid of this habit.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I am sorry if I ever swore falsely in Your name. Please forgive me. Thank you for showing me it is better not to swear. I am humbled before your mighty and glorious Name. Amen
