Day 12 – Son of David

“As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” Matthew 20:29 NLT

On seventeen occasions in the New Testament, Jesus is described as the Son of David, who gives us as His followers’ confidence not only in what Jesus has done for us but also in who He is! At the start of Matthew’s gospel, significant time is spent stating the genealogy from David to Jesus stretching some 1000 years indicating the fulfilment of the prophecy of the seed of David in 2 Samuel 7:12-16.

Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus spelts out the promised Messiah from the line of David as proof that Jesus was a descendant of Abraham and David through His earthly father, Joseph. Luke completes the line through Mary. Jesus is a descendant through adoption through Joseph and blood through Mary. Primarily, the title “Son of David” is more than a statement of his physical genealogy, it is a title indicating His Messianic standing for all mankind. When the blind men called Jesus the Son of David, it indicated that He would be the altogether wonderful deliverer waited on to bring the ultimate fulfilment of God’s glory.

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving genealogical proof of the fulfilled promise of the Son of David and that Jesus is indeed the One You promised. The blind knew who He was and understood only He could show divine mercy. Open our eyes, Lord, so that we too understand Your mercy. Amen.
