Day 130 – Proverbs: Introduction

“Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” Proverbs 1:7 NLT

Woven into the fabric of humanity is the desire to learn and understand. Our minds set us apart from animals, and we analyse, conceptualise, theorise, discuss, and debate everything from science to the supernatural. We build schools, institutes, and universities, where educated teachers can help us learn about the world and life.

Knowledge is good, but there is a vast difference between knowledge (having the facts) and wisdom (appropriately applying those facts to life). We may amass knowledge, but without wisdom, our knowledge is useless. We must learn how to live out what we know.

The wisest man who ever lived, Solomon, left us a legacy of written wisdom in three volumes: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. In these books, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he has given us practical insights and guidelines for life. It is one thing to read them, but it is wise to study and apply them to your life.

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving Solomon the wisdom to write Proverbs. Guide us so that when we study them, we can apply them wisely in our lives. May each proverb be a golden nugget of wise and divine truth to our spiritual growth. Amen.
