Day 14 – Colour your world

“As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking.” Ezekiel 1:28

I have a confession… I have A LOT of stationery. I am not exaggerating on the “A LOT” part.  I did not buy these for myself, (I need to add) it’s all leftover stationery I collected from my girls at the end of the school year. When I started with my journal journey, I was so grateful I did not throw these out!

A scientific study conducted by Sinofsky and Knirck in 1980 concluded that colours affect the behavior, attitude, attention span, and memory functions of people. A study conducted by Atkinson & Shiffrin released a paper on the impact colour has on memory. The structure of memory includes sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. When information first reaches the sensory memory, it will give a short amount of attention to the incoming information, analyze its physical and sensory characteristics, and then move the information to the short-term memory for recognition and labeling. The information which is further analyzed will move to the long-term memory for permanent storage.

Learning scripture with colour helps you to move what you are trying to memorize from short-term to long-term memory processing. You can highlight them in your Bible or you can use coloured pens to record them in your journal. I’ve colour-coded a few themes for my journal. For example, verses about the Love of God are pink, forgiveness is purple, spiritual growth is green, etc. The Bible is filled with colours and those colours hold a different meaning for you to discover. God is often described with attributes of colours too.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to using colour. Be creative, be bold, and be you!

Prayer: Today I have the greatest gratitude that You, my Lord, created colours. Not only in nature but for us to use and enjoy while studying Your Word. Guide us to colour our world as You colour our souls with Your Word. Amen.

Tip: Be bold and creative with pens, fine liners, highlighters, watercolour paint, washi tapes, and stickers to make bring colour to your page.
