Day 156 – Lamentations: Blueprint

I am one who has seen affliction by the rod of the LORD’s wrath.” Lamentations 3:1 NIV

Reading Lamentations 1:1 to Lamentations 5:22

Lamentations is written as a funeral song in 5 portions:

• Jeremiah mourns for Jerusalem (1:1-22)

• God’s anger at sin (2:1-22)

• Hope in the midst of affliction (3:1-66)

• God’s anger is satisfied (4:1-22)

• Jeremiah pleads for restoration (5:1-22)

Though Jeremiah grieved deeply because of the destruction of Jerusalem and the devastation of the nation, in the middle of the book, in the depths of his grief, there shines a ray of hope. God’s compassion is ever present. His faithfulness is great.

Jeremiah realised that this was only the Lord’s mercy that had prevented total annihilation, and Lamentations shows us the serious consequences of sin and how we can still have hope amid tragedy because God can turn anything around for good. We see the timeless importance of prayer and the confession of sin. We will all face tragedy in life, but even in our afflictions, we have hope in God.

Prayer: Father, thank You that even amid deep sorrow and grief, You are the hope we can hold on to. A hope that deepens our faith like an anchor binding us to the foundation of Your hope. May we never lose hope in You. Amen.
