Day 180 – Amos: Announcement of judgment

He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds dry up, and the top of Carmel withers.” Amos 1:2 NIV

Read Amos 1:1 to Amos 2:16

Amos spoke with brutal frankness in denouncing sin. He collided with the false religious leaders of his day and was not intimidated by priest or king. He continued to speak his message boldly. God requires truth, goodness, justice, and righteousness from all people and nations today as well. Boldly declaring His truth regardless of what the world expects from His children. Many of the conditions in Israel during Amos’s time are evident all around us. We need Amos’s courage to ignore fear and stand against sin. God is faithful and true to His word, and He roars it from Zion for those who have ears to listen.

Amos pronounced judgment from God on Israel and all the surrounding nations. From his teachings and prophecies, it is clear that we are accountable for our own sins and cannot point a finger at anyone to blame them for our actions. When those who reject God seem to get ahead, don’t envy their prosperity or feel sorry for yourself. Remember that we will all answer to God for how we lived.

Prayer: Father, thank You that today still, You roar from Zion for your children to listen. Your message has not changed since, and the call to repentance is as important today as it was then. Give us the courage to proclaim Your word as bravely and courageously as Amos did. Amen.
