Day 2 – Luke who?

“Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.” Colossians 4:14 NKJV

To understand the perspective of the Gospel of Luke, you need to understand the man behind it. Luke stands out among the Gospel writers as the only Gentile author in the New Testament.

As a first‑century physician, he had an education and training uncommon for his time. The word ‘𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘯’ typically carried a broader scope of knowledge than that of most doctors, and Luke used more medical terminology than Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician. His medical background shaped how he observed and recorded events, giving him analytical skills that strengthened the historical accuracy of his writings. His profession wasn’t just a career – 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨.

The inclusion of his writings — the Gospel and the Book of Acts — in the Biblical canon highlights that Jesus came for all. Luke wrote as an outsider to Judaism, which makes his testimony about Jesus’ redemptive plan for all nations especially significant. With his Gentile background, he was able to communicate the gospel effectively to non‑Jewish audiences.

With careful attention to detail and a compassionate eye toward humanity, Luke removes himself (his opinions and ideas) from the story to provide an insider’s view. Even though he witnessed many remarkable events during his travels with Paul, he rarely mentions himself in the narrative. For Luke, the focus was always on honoring the truth and building a reliable foundation of faith for generations to come.

Pray with me: Precious Father, thank You for showing us that our calling can change lives when we walk in obedience to You. Through Luke, we have records and events that even historians cannot dispute, strengthening both the Gospel and the Church. Teach me to honor You in all that I do, just as Luke did in his writings, where it was all about You, Lord, and not about himself. For You alone deserve all the glory and honor. In Jesus’ name, amen ©

Love, Pastor Iriza
