Day 23 – Growing God’s field

“For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9 NLT
Paul uses the reference of a field to symbolize the church. Agricultural images in Scripture typically carry connotations of growth – or the lack thereof. The idea of growth in the church is inherent in Paul’s description of the church as “God’s field”. His point is twofold. First, he chastises the Corinthians for their lack of growth. Secondly, he points to the church – when functioning properly – as the place of growth for God’s people.
Individuals have become consumers in their approach to church, remaining faithful only as long as their needs are met. Many churches themselves foster a consumerist mentality, gearing their philosophy of ministry and worshiping to attract a particular demographic. In this, there is no growth. Healthy growth is God-centred, not self-centered.
How do you view your church? Is it a place of graceful growth encouraging your relationship with God and becoming a disciple-maker in our Creator’s field or a picnic spot where you just get what you need to get you by?
Prayer: Father, please open our eyes and hearts to view the church as Your field too. That we may treat the church as a living, growing part from which the Body of Christ is nourished. Teach us to be good stewards of Your fields and responsible for what is sown, who works in them, and ensuring a bountiful harvest in Your Mighty Name. Amen.
