Day 27 – Numbers: Introduction

“Soon the people began to complain about their hardship, and the Lord heard everything they said. Then the Lord’s anger blazed against them, and he sent a fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp.” Numbers 11:1 NLT

Every parent knows the complaining cries of their child – a slow, high-pitched, aggravating whine that cannot be ignored. Though the tone of voice is difficult to bear, the real irritation is the underlying discontentment and disobedience.

As the “children” of Israel journeyed from the foot of Mount Sinai to the land of Canaan, they grumbled, whined, and complained as far as they went. Their focus was on their present discomfort instead of on the destination.

Numbers records the tragic story of Israel’s unbelief and sketches a dramatic image for all of God’s people. God loves us and wants the very best for us and should be trusted because He alone is trustworthy. We also see a clear portrayal of God’s patience as – again and again – He withholds judgment to preserve His people.

Just as we today, grumble and murmur on our journey, should never take our eye off God and the promise of Jesus’s return. Just as He was patient with Israel, He is with us. But we should never take God’s patience for granted. His judgement will come. We must obey.

Prayer: Father, please forgive my human nature of complaining and grumbling when things do not seem to go my way. Thank You for Your divine patience and fair judgment. Thank You that we have the assurance that Jesus will return and unite us with You for eternity. Amen.
