Day 5 – Faith comes by hearing

Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God—”

Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.”

One might ask where does faith come from? If I have never operated in faith, how can I start now? The Bible says faith is a gift from God. Mankind can only be saved by grace, but we need faith to receive that grace. God was merciful to even give us faith as a gift.

Furthermore, faith is activated by hearing, and hearing comes from the preaching of the gospel. So the more I hear the Word, the more I read and meditate on the Word, the more actively my faith will grow. With our physical senses (through our eyes and ears) we get exposed to the power and life of the living Word. By continually feeding our mind with the Word, we allow the truth of it to penetrate and change our thoughts (see Romans 12:2). Eventually the truth settles as a steadfast conviction in our spirit, and that is when we can unwaveringly stand in faith for a matter.

Faith is an undeserved gracious gift from God – will you receive it? Will you feed your faith and nurture it to grow strong? It is yours for the taking.

Prayer: Gracious and merciful Heavenly Father, You are so good! Your very nature speaks of kindness and love. Who are we to even deserve such a gift with which we can obtain salvation, and eternal life with You in Your kingdom? Thank you for the gift of grace! Thank you for Your Word which is alive and powerful to transform me. Help me to use my time wisely to feed and nurture my mind and spirit with Your Word. Amen.
