Day 6 – Terminology: Teacher and apprentice

2 Timothy 3:10-11 (MSG) “You’ve been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience, trouble, suffering – suffering along with me in all my grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me!”

Throughout the Bible, we find the theme of “being an apprentice”. Proverbs highlight this message to young adults (and I feel to young Christians too): “Be an apprentice, listen to your parents and let them teach you about how life works. Let your parents train you in the principles of how God has designed His creation” (22:6). Jesus too, was an apprentice to His earthly Father (carpenter), and to His heavenly Father (Saviour & Miracle Worker). An apprentice is a person who learns a trade from a skilled teacher.

An experienced Christian – who knows the Lord – and is confident in using their gifts, will teach you about spiritual gifts. Biblical teachers (or more likely spiritual fathers and mothers) teach with a scriptural foundation and from an experience platform. This is a natural process of growing in faith to a Christlike maturity from where you will start teaching. Maybe unknowingly, but you are a teacher for your children, friends, family and colleagues. We are never too old to learn and never too old to teach.

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us. Open our minds and soul to understand Your Word on a deeper and personal level. Philippians 4:6-7 said that we must pray over everything. Lord, remind us daily to pray for our teachers, mentors and leader. Send me teachers from who I can learn what You still want me to learn and grant me the wisdom to be a good apprentice. Amen.
