Day 7 – Skill development: Listening skills

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” James 1:19 NKJV

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” This quote from Stephen R. Covey’s book, (The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) rings so true in our day and age. Just like talking, listening is a gained skill in discipleship. So, what makes a good listener?

• Always make eye contact. This will enable you to be more attentive, not easily distracted and show interest.

• Give affirmative words and concentrate on your facial expressions. Showing that you are interested in what is said in a nonverbal way.

• Avoid distracting actions or gestures and focus on the person talking to you.

• Asking questions helps to ensure clarification – don’t assume.

• Listen for both fact and emotion so you don’t miss the true meaning and intent of the message.

Mature Christians understand that listening is a part of counselling. When you counsel, you need to hear God’s voice – if you are not a good listener, you might not hear when God speaks, which will influence the message to communicate. Learn to become still and focus on listening to God, before answering.

Prayer: Lord, open our hearts to Your voice so we can listen to Your message. Open our senses so we can experience Your presence. Thank You that You will never leave us. Amen.
