Day 64 – 1 Samuel: Character sketch of Hannah

“Sir, do you remember me?” Hannah asked. “I am the very woman who stood here several years ago praying to the Lord. I asked the Lord to give this boy, and he has granted my request.” 1 Samuel 1:26-27 NLT

Hannah understood that all we have and receive is on loan from God. Her prayer makes that clear. She could have made many excuses for keeping her firstborn son, and few would have blamed her if she had become a possessive mother. But when God answered her prayer, she followed through on her promise and being obedient, dedicated Samuel to God’s service. She discovered the greatest joy in having a child is giving that child fully and freely back to God. She entered motherhood prepared to do what all mothers should do – let go of their children and trust God.

Strengths and accomplishments

Hannah was fervent in worship and effective in prayer. She sought God’s help and godly counsel in her despair at being childless. She was willing to follow through on a costly commitment demonstrating a beautiful and dedicated obedience.

Noble fact

She was the mother of Samuel, God’s prophet and Israel’s greatest judge.

Life lessons from Hannah’s life

God hears our prayers and answers. We might not always like the answer, but it is always the best for us. Our children are gifts from God, but it is our responsibility to dedicate them to God and teach them about Him. God is concerned for the oppressed and afflicted – what ails you, ails Him. Take your heart to the Lord as Hannah did.

Prayer: Father, let me have a mother’s heart like Hannah. To firstly take everything to You. To accept and appreciate my children as precious gifts from You and to have the strength and courage to let go when You instruct. Thank You that I can entrust my children to You. Amen.
