Day 7 – Words Attack: Slander
“Whoever slanders his neighbour secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure.” Psalm 101:5
Slandering is an accusation maliciously uttered with the purpose to damage the reputation of another. As a rule of thumb, it’s usually false, but can also be an ugly truth circulated with a hostile purpose. Both in the Old and New Testaments, we find warnings and condemnations about this frequent sin. (Leviticus 19:16 & Ezekiel 22:9). Slanderers and backbiters are mentioned in some of Paul’s darkest listings of evildoers too.
To refrain from slander is an important characteristic of a Christian. Jesus was a victim of slander (Matthew 11:19) and false testimonies. Not once did he retaliate or found it necessary to defend Himself against these words, because He knew that the Truth would win and set Him (with all His children) free.
We sometimes feel it’s our duty to defend the slander against us and God. Today’s verse is not sugar-coated about what will happen to whoever slanders. God plainly says He will destroy them.
Prayer: Father, please forgive my arrogant heart and each and every time I have slandered against my neighbour. I pray that the power of those words is broken in the Name of Jesus. Where there is slandering against me, Lord please give me the grace to carry on because I know that the truth will come to light. Amen.
