Day 75 – Take heed how you hear
“Therefore take heed how you hear.” Luke 8:18a
Jesus reminded His listeners that no one lights a lamp only to smother it under a vessel or hide it beneath a bed. Instead, a lamp is placed high on a stand so that everyone who enters the room may see its light. Divine truth, by its very nature, is meant to be revealed. God does not ignite the light of His Word in our lives for it to remain hidden in secret, but so that its brilliance might illuminate a dark world. If we have been entrusted with the saving truth of the Gospel, we carry a solemn responsibility to spread that light, sharing the Word directly and drawing others to hear it.
Because the Word carries such divine power and truth will ultimately come to light, Jesus issued a crucial directive: “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳.”
It is not enough simply to listen to the Word of God in a passive, casual manner. To hear without engaging our mind, heart, and will is a dangerous posture. We are called to hear attentively, prayerfully, and obediently, actively cultivating the soil of our hearts to receive what God is speaking.
Jesus revealed a spiritual principle of momentum that governs how we receive truth: “𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘴, 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯.” When we receive God’s Word with gladness and live it out, God entrusts us with even more! More understanding, deeper spiritual capacity, and a greater hunger for His presence. But to hear with indifference is to risk losing even what we presume to hold. Spiritual growth is never static, and true reception of God’s light always leads to active, fruit-bearing faith.
Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for shining the light of Your truth into my life. Forgive me for the times I have heard Your Word passively or hidden Your light away. Give me a heart that listens with deep attention and obedience, so that Your grace may multiply in my life and shine brightly to those around me. Amen. ©
