Day 76 – Closer than family

“But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 8:21

When Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived to see Him, the crowd surrounding Him was so dense that they could not even get nearby. When the message was passed through the crowd that His family was standing outside desiring to speak with Him, we might naturally expect that Jesus would pause everything to grant them special privilege.

Instead, Jesus used the moment to reveal a startling truth about kingdom relationships: “𝘔𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵.”

While blood ties and family heritage carry great significance in human terms, Jesus radically redefined what it means to be in His inner circle. He declared that those who hear God’s Word and actively put it into practice share an intimacy with Him that surpasses even the closest natural family bonds.

This sets a profound standard for how we draw near to Christ. We do not cultivate true closeness with Him merely through religious activity, fervent prayers, or outward ritual. A person may pray, sing, or fast all day long, but if they lack a heart that hears His Word and obeys it, they remain standing on the outside.

Our devotion to Christ is measured by our response to His truth. When we incline our ears to God’s Word and align our lives with His commands, we step into a relationship of deep, eternal fellowship with the Savior – recognized by Him not merely as followers, but as His very family.

Pray with me: Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me into such precious intimacy with You. Forgive me for the times I rely on religious routine rather than simple obedience. Give me a heart that eagerly hears Your Word and a willing spirit that puts it into practice every day. Amen. ©
