Day 89 – 2 Kings: Character sketch of Elisha

“When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away” And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.” 2 Kings 2:9 NLT
Few successors in scripture were as effective as Elisha, who took up the mantle of God’s prophet to Israel. He had a great example to follow in Elijah. He remained with Elijah until the last moments of his teacher’s life on earth. He was willing to follow and learn to prepare to do the work to which God had called him.
Elisha saw more in life than most people because he recognised that God brought more to life. He knew that all the good that we are and have come to us from God. The miracles that occurred during Elisha’s ministry put people in touch with the personal and all-powerful one true God. I believe Elijah would have been proud of his successor.
Strengths and accomplishments
As the successor of Elijah, he had a major impact on four nations: Israel, Judah, Moab, and Aram. He was a man of integrity who did not try to get rich at others’ expense and did many miracles to help those in need.
Noble fact
He had a ministry that lasted 50 years
Life lessons from Elisha’s life
In God’s eyes, one measure of greatness is the willingness to serve the poor as well as the powerful in His truth. Effective successors not only learn from their teachers but also build upon their achievements.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Elisha and the powerful miracles You worked through Him. From his life, we learn that building forth on what You have already put in motion is important for the building of the Kingdom. May we have the discernment to use Your wisdom when helping others. Amen.
