Day 2 – Where do curses come from?

“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:3 (KJV)

“And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.” Josua 6:26

Curses come from two places, from God, or man. I want to say from Satan, but he is not that powerful. He only has the power to use the curses God or man sends, against us. From Genesis 12:3, and also from Deuteronomy 27 and Jeremiah 17, we see that God Himself curses people. We are going to look at a few of the curses mentioned in the scripture in this devotional.

We also see in Josua 6:26, 1 Kings 16:34, and 2 Samuel 1:21 that man can curse man as well. The Bible talks about life and death being in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21), and curses are spoken with the tongue and can therefore lead to life or death. Curses are words, charged with supernatural power, either from God or from the devil. We should therefore be very careful what we allow our tongues to say. We can say something in the heat of the moment when we are angry or upset, and not realize we are speaking a curse over someone. We can also speak curses over ourselves without realizing what we are doing.

The amazing news is, that Jesus died on the cross so that our curses can be broken and we can live free. So don’t let the fact that someone can curse you be a worry to you because we will see in tomorrow’s devotional that a curse without cause will not be able to affect you. We should keep our lives clean so that the curses spoken over us have no cause.

Prayer: Dear Jesus. Please help me through this journey to become clean of all curses and causes. I want to be clean before you and I don’t want to be in a position where God or man feels the need to curse me. Wash me clean Lors and forgive my sins. Amen.
