Day 10 – Fighting fear

“But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” Mark 4:37-38 NLT

Previously we looked at the symptoms of a storm, but what happens when the storm hits full force and everything you feared becomes a sudden hurricane of reality? Is this not exactly where the enemy wants you to be? We tend to make decisions from a place of fear instead of faith. The tiniest crack in our faith opens the door for the mission God gave us to be killed, stolen, and destroyed. (John 10:10)

The apostles had everything they needed: sent by Jesus, provisions, destination, and Jesus interceding for them…

One could argue that if Jesus was with them – in the boat – they would not have been afraid, right? The first time they were stuck in a storm in Mark 4, Jesus was sleeping, and they were afraid. After they woke Him, He calmed the storm – asking them about their faith. When you are in the midst of the storm, hold on to faith – to Jesus who is the steadfast mast in your heart.

Prayer: Father, it is easy for us to think or even say not to be afraid until the storm hits. Lord, in those dark and unsure moments, when wind, waves, and rain pummel us, remind us that our faith is bigger than fear. We can surrender fully to You as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane. That no matter what we face, we trust in You. Amen.
