Day 12 – “But why?”
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things.” Philippians 4:8
“But why?” I rolled my eyes as I remembered my kids also bombarding me with “why” questions when they were toddlers. “Because the filter cleans the water and puts oxygen back in the water for the fish.” Two little faces inspected the empty fish tank with all the gadgets lying inside. “But why?” came the question again.
“So they can breathe” I explained again. After the umpteenth explanation, I did what I did with the girls and asked, “Well, what do you think?” Not only did this teach the girls to figure out something for themselves, but also to never be afraid to “think differently” than the world and not to follow the norm of society.
Creative thinking became commoditised as we are bombarded with what we should, and how we should think. Our previous devotional covered the popular Philippians 4:8 pointing our thoughts and focus toward Jesus. My prayer is that our children will always think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and praiseworthy. That their thoughts will always seek out Jesus.
Prayer: Father, You have created each of us with our own mind, thoughts, thought processing, and ideas. That we have the ability to think and choose to think about the things listed in Philippians and on conforming our minds to Your will and Word. Guide our children to be thinkers according to Your Word and Truth. Amen.
