Day 3 – Staying in Egypt

“But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.” Genesis 12:17 NIV

Egypt can be a blessing or a curse as well as a place of refuge or a place of oppression. Abraham went to Egypt to seek refuge because of a famine in Canaan. Genesis 12:14 says that the Egyptians saw that Sarah was a very beautiful woman and Pharaoh include her in his household. Pharaoh treated Abraham well and he prospered in the land.

Abraham and Lot his nephew went from Egypt to Negev and they were wealthy with livestock, silver, and gold. All went well but quarreling arose between their herders and the two nephews decided to move apart.

We may feel welcome in Egypt (the world) but we will always be a foreigner living in Egypt. God will protect you and bless you in Egypt, but you will never be saved. It is the nature of this world that we are slaves to our sin and powerless under its weight.

God loved us so very much that He gave His son, Jesus, to rescue us from Egypt. Who himself was a refugee in Egypt and knows what it feels like to be a foreigner.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for saving me from the bondage of this world. I am not a slave of this world because Your blood saved me and I am now a citizen of heaven and my inheritance is secured in Your hands. Amen.
