Day 34 – Deuteronomy: Theme

“Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.” Deuteronomy 7:9 NLT

This book of the Pentateuch covers five major themes. First, Moses reviews the history and mighty acts of God liberating His chosen nation. He recounted how God rescued them from Egypt’s slave whips and reviewed God’s promises and provisions even as the nation disobeyed during these times. He reviewed the laws – Commandments and regulations – and that their commitment to God and His truth cannot be taken for granted. Third, Moses reminds the nation of God’s faithful and patient love for them and in response God desires their love from the heart, not merely a legalistic keeping of His laws. Moses also reminded the people to ratify God’s covenant, they must choose the path of obedience. Our choice makes a difference. Choosing to follow God is beneficial for our lives. Moses wraps up the importance of the Israelites being teachers to their children in all His ways. Quality teaching for our children must be prioritised to pass on God’s truth to future generations.

The lessons are clear. Because of what God has done, the Israelites should have hope and follow Him; because of what He expects, they should act in obedience; because of who He is, they can love Him completely.

Prayer: Father, thank You for showing us the importance of understanding where your nation comes from and how we can teach the next generation about You. Help us understand the history to understand the love You have for us. Amen.
