Day 35 – Deuteronomy: Moses’s first address

Reading: Deuteronomy 1:1 -4:43

“But from there you will search again for the Lord your God. And if you search for Him with all your heart and soul, you will find Him” Deuteronomy 4:29 NLT

I can only imagine what Moses must have felt like standing at the threshold of the Promised Land vividly recalling the past 40 years of wilderness wandering, the exodus and his life. God kept His hand over Moses as he led Israel through every day of those 40 years – enduring their rebellion and grumblings while teaching them God’s laws and love.

Moses meticulously kept a record of all God commanded and decreed as well as His victories over their enemies, punishments for disobedience, and miracles. The first part of Deuteronomy covers Israel’s history and what God has done for them. It’s in the light of their history they were able to move forward into a promise that might have felt will never be a reality.

It’s in the light of our past – mistakes and all – that we can move into the promise of faith through Jesus who shows the way to our eternal future.

Prayer: Father, how great thou art! Your love is evident as we read how You looked after Your nation. You disciplined and taught and loved, just like You do with us today too. When You bring our past in remembrance, allow us to understand that the lessons we have learned and the miracles You’ve done are important for us to build our faith in You for our future. Amen.
