Day 37 – Deuteronomy: Moses’s third address

Reading: Deuteronomy 29:2 to Deuteronomy 30:20
“By entering into the covenant today, he will establish you as his people and confirm that he is your God, just as he promised you and as he swore to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 29:13 NLT
Closing his address to the nation, Moses called Israel to commit to God. From the tribal leaders, elders, officers, and all the men of Israel to the little ones and wives, as well as the foreigners who chop wood and carry water. Not one person was excluded from this call. Moses highlighted the covenant and what would follow their disobedience. He urged Israel to return to God (the first revival sermon in my opinion) and to love Him with all their heart and soul.
The book of Deuteronomy is a beautiful example of a leader who can encourage, discipline, and give hope to those under his care through the love of God. He was strict, but never waivered from the love He knew God is. Moses could never have imagined that his last words to the nation he led would be recorded for us as a guide for navigating our lives. These addresses weren’t merely “last words” to be remembered by, but the Word of God pouring from Him as truth and life.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Moses and what He taught, not just to Israel but for us too. Show us how to lead with Your Word and Love. Amen.
