Day 5 – Prayer Journals

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

Keeping a prayer journal allows you to forever remember the ways God speaks to you in prayer. It serves as a reminder of God’s activity in your life and a record of God’s love when it feels as though God has become silent. Writing down your prayers can be an avenue of prayer in itself and is a way to remind your future self that God does listen and answer your prayers. It allows you to look back at the history of your prayer journey as you take time to flip back through the pages a year, two years, or five years from now.

The benefits of keeping a prayer journal include:

• Building your trust through prayer

• Putting more thought into your prayers

• Form a prayer habit

• Keep track of your prayers and how it was answered

Today’s verse is a beautiful reminder that we can bring everything to God and make our requests known to Him. Whether it is prayers from your mouth or prayers written down, it is like a letter to our Father. Do not fret about how the words sound or agonize over grammar. What you write is for you and God alone – and He is not judging your writing. After all, the Bible itself is a record of God’s fulfilled promises and extravagant love, a sort of “prayer journal” of the Jewish people and then the early Christian community as they witnessed the power of God’s love alive among them.

Prayer: Father, sometimes I find it hard to put my prayers into words and I thank You that You’ve given us the knowledge to write so I can write my prayers to You. Lord, You are so gracious and loving and gave us multiple ways to bring our prayers to You in everything we need so that we can experience Your peace which surpasses all understanding. Amen.

Tip: The most important part of this process is to include scripture that has a meaning for you for the day. It can include verses you would like to meditate on or verses you would like to dig deeper into. There are days I cannot articulate my feelings into prayer, and I write down scripture as prayer.
