Day 51 – Judges: Character sketch of Deborah

“Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was a prophet who was judging Israel at that time. She would sit under the Palm of Deborah, between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites would go to her for judgment.” Judges 4:4*5 NLT
Wise leaders are rare. They can see the big picture that often escapes those directly involved. They make good mediators, advisers, planners, and delegators. Deborah fits this description perfectly. She had exceptional leadership skills and a remarkable relationship with God. The insight and confidence God gave this special woman placed her in a unique position in the era of the Judges – making her one of the extraordinary women of the Old Testament. Her heart desired to serve God; through her story, we see she wasn’t power-hungry. Whenever praise came her way, she gave God the credit for the success. In addition to being a wife, the role of being a judge was unusual and could have hindered the nation from accepting her as their judge. But we see the people seeking her out under the palm for wise counsel.
Strengths and accomplishments
Deborah had great abilities as a mediator, advisor, and counsellor. When called to lead, she was able to plan, direct, and delegate. She was known for her prophecy and wrote songs.
Noble fact
She was recorded as the only known female judge of Israel.
Life lessons from Deborah’s story
God chooses leaders by his standards, not ours. Wise leaders, like Deborah, choose good helpers and motivate and help the people they call into action.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Deborah and the wisdom we can learn from the way she leads, mediates, advises, counsels, plans, directs, and delegates. She is a beautiful example for women in leadership positions. May we carry the same desire to please and serve You and give You all the praise and glory. Amen.
