Day 56 – Ruth: Introduction

“Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons. The two sons married Moabite women. One married a woman named Orpah, and the other a woman named Ruth. But about ten years later, both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband.” Ruth 1:3-5 NLT

When someone says, “Let me tell you about my mother-in-law,” you often expect a negative comment, an anecdote, or a bad joke since this stereotype is frequently used in humour and comedy. However, the book of Ruth presents a different narrative. Beneath the surface of this beautiful love story, it also reveals deeper relational love.

We also see God’s love story of grace amid difficult circumstances. Ruth’s story unfolds in the time of the judges – a period of disobedience, idolatry, and violence. Even in times of crisis and despair, some chose to follow God in obedience. No matter how discouraging or antagonistic the world may seem, there is always a remnant true to God.

Ruth’s story offers a “behind-the-scenes” look at God’s plan for the Messiah, despite the fact that His chosen people chose to follow their own hearts. While we may not see the complete picture of God’s plan for our lives and may not be on that path yet, we can trust that He has already set it in motion.

Prayer: Father, through Ruth we learn so much about Your love and grace and the relational love between people and a glimpse at how You want us to love those in our lives. May we journey with Ruth as Your love story unfolds in our hearts. Amen.
