Day 55 – Judges: Character sketch of Samson

“Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me again. O God, please strengthen me just one more time. With one blow let me pay back the Philistines for the loss of my two eyes.” Judges 16:28 NLT
It is sad to be remembered for who someone could have been. Samson had tremendous potential and not many started lives with credentials like his. Born as a result of God’s plan in the lives of Manoah and his wife, Samson was set apart as a Nazarene to do great work for God – to “begin to rescue Israel from the Philistines.” He was given supernatural physical strength but wasted his talents on impulsive choices, practical jokes, and getting into trouble. Yes, Samson wasted his life and there are a lot of “could haves” like: strengthening the nation, returning worship to God and wiping out their enemies.
Interestingly, the New Testament doesn’t mention Samson’s failures or heroic feats as he is listed in Hebrews 11 amongst others who “overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them.” Samson recognized his dependence on God and his failures turned into victories.
Strengths and accomplishments
Samson was known for his strength and began to free Israel from the Philistines through his final act.
Weaknesses and mistakes
He violated God’s laws on many occasions and was controlled by sensuality instead of spirituality. He confided in the wrong people and used his gifts and abilities unwisely.
Life lessons from Samson’s story
God’s presence does not overrule a person’s will. Great strength in one area of life does not make up for weaknesses in another. God can use someone despite their mistakes and accepts our repentance with love and gives us grace.
Prayer: Father, thank You for Samson so we can learn to appreciate the gifts You give us and not use them unwisely. Help us to trust You with the plan for our lives and guide us to make wise decisions according to Your Word. Amen.
