Day 6 – Davidic Covenant

“Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.” 2 Samuel 7:16 NLT

From verse 6 God enfolds His promises to David through the prophet Nathan. First, He reminds David that He lived amongst His people in the tabernacle since the exodus and that He has been with David wherever he went, and has defeated his enemies. God then promises David that he will make his name great and historic. God declares that he will give Israel rest from her enemies. God then promises the establishment of the kingdom through David’s offspring forever. God made a beautiful promise to be with his children but will also discipline them, just like a loving Father does. God promises that His steadfast love will not depart from David as it was taken from Saul. And, finally, the establishment of David’s throne forever.

This is a mouthful filled with one promise after the after, but what speaks to my heart is that even though each Word was specifically for David, it was also prophetic for the promised Messiah and relevant to you and me today. God is with you and goes with you wherever you go. That He will defeat your enemies too. We’ve been adopted as sons and daughters through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and we are part of the promises following the establishment of the Kingdom of our Heavenly King.

“Berit” (covenant) is not found in this chapter, but scripture refers to this promise as a covenant in 2 Samuel 23:5 and Psalm 98:3. It had been anticipated in God’s covenant with Abraham – through the Davidic kingship God’s promise of blessing the nations would be accomplished. Where a realm and a people for God’s kingdom were promised. It had also been anticipated in the Mosaic covenant – the Davidic king would be the expression and reflection of the righteous rule of the divine King, providing the law of the Kingdom and leading the nation in the faithful observance thereof.

The Davidic covenant became the nucleus around which messages of hope proclaimed by Hebrew prophets of the later generations were built. But it also does something for us today. We have the privilege to read the history which was then in the making and see the plan God developed throughout the years to have this personal relationship with us today through His Only Son, Jesus.

Prayer: Father, today I thank You for the establishment of Your covenant with David securing the generational pathway for Jesus to enter this world as Your Son, our eternal King. Lord, thank You that this covenant applies to me too. That I KNOW You are with me always and that You defeat my enemies. I KNOW that I’m an adopted daughter and part of this promise You put in motion. I KNOW that through the establishment of this covenant and through Jesus who was the fulfilled promise, I have the freedom to have a growing relationship with You. Amen.
