Day 9 – Thorns
“It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its gains.” Genesis 3:18
The only thing – and I mean the only thing – I do not like about working in my garden is the pesky little thorns pricking into my feet and hands. Every season I try my best to rid my garden of weeds, thorns, and thistles, but somehow they appear uninvited. When I look at the tiny leaves peaking through the soil I think of this verse in Genesis. Because of Adam’s sin, the soil was cursed to grow thorns and thistles. The thorns I find in my garden are a sharp, and sometimes painful reminder, of the consequences of Adam’s sin.
“They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews”. Matthew 26:29
The thorns Adam’s sin brought into the world were thorns Jesus wore as a crown. And a crown of thorns became a crown of victory for us. Believing in Jesus will not make the thorns in my garden disappear, but it reminds me of how Jesus brought to completion what the first Adam could not.
Prayer: Father, it is such beautiful imagery to think of the thorns of Adam as a curse and the thorns that became the crown Jesus wore. Through Your sacrifice, Jesus, You took something cursed and broke all curses on the cross. For this, I am eternaly grateful. Guide us to be reminded of this and that no curse is unbreakable in the Name of Jesus. Amen.
