Day 7 – Fans are enthusiastic admirers, followers stand in service.

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;” Psalms 91:5-9 (KJV)
If you look at the definition of the word fan, it is described in the dictionary as “someone who enthusiastically admires”. Being in admiration of someone means that you recognize their greatness and you are enthusiastically observing and listening to this person. Admiration usually starts to fade after a while. (After you have gotten used to the idea of the person you were admiring.) Like the crowds in the Bible who listened to Jesus’ sermons and watched Him do miracles. They admired Him and were fascinated by His healing power.
When Jesus was arrested, however, none of these crowds stood up for Him or said that He was the true Messiah. No one wanted to carry His cross. Even some that were considered his followers denied Him in fear of the price they would have to pay.
A follower is described as “someone who stands in service”. I would say this is the biggest difference between a fan and a follower. A follower not only follows Jesus but stands in His service, ready to do what Jesus expects of them. The follower does not hide away when the assignments Jesus gives are tough. No, that’s when they realize that Jesus will give you assignments you think might be too big for you, so that you will trust everything in Him. As a follower, you will lay down your life, and become more and more like Jesus, no matter what the price you have to pay.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for paying the ultimate price for me and my sins. I want to be a true follower of you, no matter what the price is that I will have to pay. I know in the end You will reign and I will be with you for eternity. Please remind me to be your follower, through good and bad times. Amen.
