Day 7 – Frugal

“She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.” Proverbs 31:14 (ESV)

The book of Proverbs can be your greatest enemy. If you interpret it wrong, it is a good housewife’s dream and a bad one’s nightmare. A pantry filled with foodstuffs.

I remember my struggles when I first got married. Supper every night was: Pasta! It continued for three months. One evening my husband came home to the same wife, with the same dish. It was time for cooking lessons. It is a few years later, and I am still not the greatest cook. (I have mishaps and disasters that the dog even refuses to eat.) You would be surprised to know that my family does not suffer from malnutrition.

We ALL fail compared to this Proverbs woman. We must however remember that the entire chapter 31 was written as a guide for young men. It is a mother that takes it upon herself to teach when it comes to choosing a good wife.  Sadly, the description of a good homemaker is always compared to Proverbs 31. Verse 14 contains far more than it seems. This woman is measured by her spiritual maturity and not a full pantry.

A seasoned housewife has everything in her pantry. No quick shopping trips to the local corner store are needed or an impulsive shopping spree and hardly any bargain hunting. Want it, she has it!

When things get out of hand, we run out of patience and faith. In Christ, however, we have a full pantry. Thin on love and kindness, don’t worry, God’s pantry is open for the taking. Be a seasoned woman in Christ and you will have access to the pantry.

Prayer: Lord, help us to stock up on our relationship with You. That we will not seek You only in an emergency but have a lasting relationship with You. One filled in abundance. Amen.
